The largest vessel is the tanker Jahre Viking, owned by Jorgen Jahre Shipping A/S of Sandefjord, Norway. She has a length of 459 metres and a deadweight of 564.650 tonnes. Originally built in Japan, she was declared a total loss during the Iran-Iraq war in 1987 while under the name Seawise Giant and underwent extensive rebuilding before recommencing service in 1991.

The largest unitised dry cargo vessel is the bulk ore carrier Berge Stahl, owned by Bergesen A/S of Olso. Built 1988 in South Korea, she has a deadweight of 364,767 tonnes and a lenght of 343 metres.

The largest unitised vessel is the Sovereign Maersk which is owned by A.P. Moller of Copenhagen. Completed in 1997 with a deadweight of 104,696 tonnes, it is able to carry over 7,000 TEU. She is one of a series of 12 sisterships. The Dole Chile and Dole Columbia, completed in November 1999,are the largest reefer container vessels. With a gross tonnage of 34,840 they can carry 2046 TEU.

The world's largest cruise-ship is the Voyager of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises. Completed in October 1999 at Kvaerner Masa yard in Turku, Finland, she has a gross tonnage of 142,000. The vessel, with 1,550 cabins giving a double capacity of 3,100 passengers, has a crew of 1,176. She is the first of 5 sisterships that will jointly remain the largest until Cunard introduces its Queen Mary 2 in 2003.
